Artists like to build up a body of work – and Hamilton woman April Hernandez has taken that quite literally.

The talented 35-year-old student scooped first place in a body painting competition.

She came out tops after impressing judges at the Association of Hairdressing and Therapists Awards (AHT) which were held in Coatbridge College.

April travelled there with fellow make-up artistry students from her course at West College Scotland, and she said: Being able to enter and represent my college in a competition like the AHT’s has allowed me to push my body painting skills to a greater level than before.

“The tight time scale has forced me to increase my speed dramatically, something which is important in this industry.

“Winning first place was an amazing feeling and has really boosted my confidence and has motivated me to not only work towards the final, but also to think about entering the student competition in Paintopia (an annual event held in the UK which attracts many of the best body artists from around the world).

“I’m so happy I had the course to help me take on this challenge.”

With the regional heat under their belts the students are now preparing themselves for the National Finals in Blackpool on the 16 and 17 March, where they will compete against finalists from the England and Wales qualifying heats.
